New York City NightLife
Spend a long weekend in New York City, and although it will be
over before you know it, you will feel that more than a few days
have passed. Time moves very quickly here, and each moment is packed
full of wonder and surprise, whether you are enjoying a planned
event, or just wandering around to see what is happening. The worlds
capital city is open 24/7, and the concept of bedtime is totally
inappropriate here. It will not be long before you to locate your
favorite nighttime spots, and we hope that the following small selection
will help you get started in some interesting directions.
Dangerfields
If you have postponed your first visit to a comedy club until you
could find a really worthy example, then your wait is over. In fact,
you are in the same city with the oldest and best of them all. Dangerfields
in midtown Manhattan has hosted Jerry Seinfeld, Jim Carrey, and
the best known names in entertainment. In fact, Rodney himself and
other stars pay frequent surprise visits. Make an evening of it,
including dinner, although there is no food or drink minimum here.

B. B. King Blues
Club and Grill
Good, genuine blues music is not easy to find these days, but at
B. B. Kings you can experience the real thing every night,
smack dab in the middle of Times Square. Such masters as James Brown,
Little Richard and Greg Allman, as well as the older legendary blues
artists, have performed here. Lunch, dinner, or a full menu during
all performances is offered, or just come in for a few drinks while
you listen to your all-time favorites, up close and in person.
237 W. 42 St., bet. 7th and 8th Aves., (212) 997-4144
The Knitting
Factory
Fast becoming the new birthplace of original sounds and ground-breaking
culture, the Knitting Factory should be on any New York City itinerary.
Primarily a rented hall, where the latest in musical technology
is available to some of the best, though not necessarily best-known,
underground musicians in the world, this live music club, state
of the art video production studio, full bar and cafe is in continuous
use night after night, and is one of Lou Reeds favorite places
to visit and perform live in an intimate setting. Something amazing
will be happening there on whichever night you choose to go.
74 Leonard Street, TriBeCa, (212) 219-3006
Swing46
For a truly different and authentic New York City experience, check
out some of the Midtown supper clubs, where most offer a superior
menu and live music, and some even offer dance lessons. Swing46,
for example, most evenings features instructors from the premier
Manhattan dance studio Dance Manhattan, a full bar and menu, and
one of the best live swing bands around. Have a great meal, and
learn to dance the Lindy Hop.
349 W. 46th St., bet. 8th and 9th Aves., (212) 262-9554
Guggenheim Museum
For a more upscale, dressy evening out, the Guggenheim Museum usually
has something interesting going on, particularly on weekends. During
the summer season, for example, the WorldBeat Jazz series of small
jazz ensembles is offered in the Frank Lloyd Wright Rotunda, every
Friday and Saturday night from 5PM to 8PM. Enjoy a cocktail, listen
to the best jazz around, tour one of the master architects
most famous structures, and enjoy one of the finest collections
of contemporary art in the world.
